i love rom but he should have been the one to die in the battle of ds9, rather than ziyal. a heroic sacrifice would have paid off his character arc much better than becoming grand nagus, his death would have affacted quark (and therefore dominion collaborator odo, who quark would naturally blame), nog (and therefore jake and the sisko), and even kira (a ferenghi sacrificing himself to save the federation would feed into her final arc of being a bajoran fighting to sava cardassia). Meanwhile Ziyal is probably the greatest missed opportunity of a character, who as a cardassian/bajoran could easily play an interesting role in the cardassian resistance arc
i'm imagining he somehow gets a starfleet funeral with everyone saluting hs corpse before it gets cut up and auctioned off

DS9: "Family Business"
When Quark and Rom go home to visit their mother, it's a recipe for wackiness! Also, Commander Sisko meets freighter captain Kasidy Yates.
I'm going to go ahead and call this the peak of the Ferengi episodes. We get to see the homeworld of Ferenginar, Ishka strikes a blow for fee-males everywhere, and the story makes us learn a thing or two about Quark as a character. Pretty sure the remaining Ferengi episodes are all downhill from here, but I guess we'll find out when we get to them.
A recurring theme with the Ferengi on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is constant references to "lobes" (their ears) as a metaphor for good business sense. Fittingly, clever Ferengi like Quark and Nog have pretty big lobes, while Rom's are a touch smaller. Grand Nagus Zek, the leader of the entire Ferengi race, has huge ears, I'm talking serious lobeonkers. Pel, the first Ferengi woman we ever met--because they aren't allowed to go offworld or do business--has much smaller lobehongerekoogers, suggesting the "big ears = big money" notion is tightly coupled to the Ferengis' attitudes about gender. So I'm not sure what it means, exactly, that Liquidator Brunt has unusually small lobeadonkers for a male, while Quark's mother Ishka has humungous hungolobemghnonolobeoughongous.
The B-plot, in which literally all the main characters know Jake Sisko is trying to fix his dad up with Yates, is cute. It's pleasant that Ben and Kassidy surprise one another with a shared interest in baseball. But the showrunners can't seem to settle on whether Kassidy is a step removed from the sport (her brother plays in a league and she listens to the games) or if she's as hardcore as Sisko is. I think it would have been more interesting if she knew just enough about baseball to get them talking long enough to find other things they have in common. But as we'll see, the entire relationship ends up revolving around Ben, Jake, and Kassidy being giant baseball nerds. Big old otakuwonkerdorks.

star trek update time! last night we did voy's "the mortal coil" and ds9's "the magnificent ferengi."
the mortal coil (voy):
i don't want to talk about it.
the magnificent ferengi (ds9):
i feared for my life reading the summary but this was actually pretty good
first of all, my new best friend quark. EYE loved his story at the beginning. secondly, my other friend nog and my king rom. and finally, the return of that little twink freak from s6's opening. mwah
this one was like...weirdly funny. it's easier to give some of the iffy jokes a pass or even a laugh when you don't hate everyone involved. it also helps a lot that the grand nagus couldn't make it for this episode because he is DEEPLY annoying and horrible to deal with
that spock's brain shit nog did to the vorta was really really really really horrible and funny. some say he's still bumping into the wall to this day.......
AND LET'S NOT FORGET IGGY POP. my favorite fun fact about this episode is that they wanted to have iggy pop on for the bell riots eps and they couldn't because he was busy. but he was available this time because he was recovering from an injury he got in a mosh pit. so true
it was kind of fun and badass that despite their general bumbling they did manage to bag a new prisoner of war. good for them
also, at the end when romwas like how doe sit feel to be a hero and quark said you tell me 🥺🥺🥺 my best friend quark....................
TONIGHT: voy's "waking moments" and ds9's "waltz."

My Star Trek Theory is that all Ferengi have catchy, single syllable mononyms because we actually only see successful Ferengi and the Ferengi Naming Day tradition (mentioned once on DS9) involves buying out every other Ferengi with the same name as you so you can maintain a brand dominance.
"But Rom is bad at business!" only compared to his brother, we frequently see him make very shrewd decisions. He even embezzled successfully from Grand Nagus Zek.
Rom and Quark's father, Keldar, was notedly bad at business, and listen to how untrademark friendly Keldar sounds rolling off the tongue. That is clearly a name picked out of the bin after he sold Tranq or Morg or something to some Ferengi with better lobes.
